Are You Ready to Plan for 2027?
Most companies aren't.
Q4 pressure is real. Deals need to close. Leadership is stretched between finishing this year and deciding what next year looks like.
The companies that win 2027 aren't waiting for January. They spend what's left of this year finding out what the revenue system (the people, process, and structure behind the number) can support, where it's lacking, and what needs fixing.
Setting the number is easy. Building the system that hits it is the job.
The Unnamed Gap
Most leadership teams land on a number fast. The harder question: can the revenue system underneath it actually produce it?
Targets can be sharp and ambitious. The system behind them can still be a mess. That gap doesn't get named in the planning meeting. It just sits there, waiting for Q4 to expose it.
Plenty of companies have pipeline that looks qualified on paper. Fewer have pipeline that's real: a confirmed budget, a named decision-maker, a decision timeline that isn't a guess. Fewer still review it closely enough, or often enough, to catch a stalling deal before it becomes a missed quarter.
2027 planning can't stop at “what number do we want.” It needs a second question right behind it: what system is going to produce that number ?
That gap shows up later. Stalled deals. Forecasts that keep getting revised. The same conversation, three meetings in a row, still no answer, everyone assuming someone else is tracking it.
What to Review, and Test, Today
Start with what 2026 already told you. Where did your pipeline build real confidence, and where was it just noise?
Then turn to next year's number. Is there enough real pipeline behind it? Does your operating rhythm catch drift early, or does leadership find out the same week the salesperson does?
That's not a checkbox exercise. It's what makes the number credible instead of hopeful.
Q4 Tells the Truth, Ready or Not
Pipeline that was never real gets exposed. Ownership gaps stop being theoretical. Decisions dodged in Q2 and Q3 get more expensive by the week.
Q4 is also where a company gets stronger, if it uses that pressure right.
Teams entering it with a real system aren't scrambling to find the number. They're managing to it. Making better calls on where to spend time. Solid ground going into next year instead of a scramble to catch up.
If 2027's number is already being talked about in your company, find out now whether the system behind it can deliver it. The companies that wait for the end of Q4 to tell them will learn it the hard way. The ones that ask now get to drive it, or fix it, before it costs them the quarter.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on what your revenue system can actually support heading into next year, happy to compare notes.
My best,
Michael
